CYA levels are achieved when a minimum skill level is achieved. The number of weeks it takes to earn a level varies. Everyone learns at their own pace and weather plays a big role. White Sail, Levels I, II and III Levels I and II are for beginner sailors 10 and over who are ready for more formalized training in safety, seamanship, terminology and boat handling. After Level III the sailor can safely sail with minimal supervision. Bronze Sail, Levels IV and V Level IV teaches sail trim boat tuning and advanced boat handling skills. Level V teaches spinnaker use, trapezing, boat maintenance and sail theory. CYA levels are achieved when a minimum skill level is achieved. The number of weeks it takes to earn a level varies. Everyone learns at their own pace and weather plays a big role. Learn to Race (LTR) At the LJSC, Learn to Race is taught in conjunction with Bronze IV and V and generally takes 2 seasons to complete. LTR teaches basic racing rules and theories a requires participation in regatta’s as well as seasonal training. For a complete description of CYA levels, please go to the CYA. Opti Program This is a one week introductory program for 8 and 9 year olds which will prepare them for White Sail I when they turn 10. These young students will learn to sail using the Optimist/Mosquito/Pram boats as well as a specially designed workbook. Most of Canada’s Olympic Sailors learned to sail in this kind of boat. Adult Clinic This is a 4 morning program designed to teach a small group of adults the basics of sailing. This class will have a dedicated instructor and be taught separately from the children. The intent is not to achieve CYA levels, but rather have students become comfortable and skilled enough to be able to sail with their children…perhaps in the weekend club races!! |
